SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars. This is a microneedling procedure that helps to improve your skin’s appearance by stimulating its natural ability to produce collagen and repair itself. Over time, fine lines and wrinkles disappear, revealing an enhanced skin tone and texture and improvement in the appearance of large pores and acne scarring. It’s also great for any other surface irregularity like crepe skin and stretch marks. With as few as three non-invasive treatments spaced 30 days apart, the skin’s appearance is improved for six months after the last treatment.
The SkinPen Precision system is the only Class II, FDA cleared microneedling device legally marketing in the U.S.
The SkinPen microneedling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of collagen and elastin.1
There are three phases to the wound repair process:
- Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
- Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is re-built with new granulation cells, as well as a temporary (type III) collagen and elastin, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
- Phase III: Remodeling. The wound has been replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels. The type III collagen in the newly formed tissue is replaced with stronger type I collagen, which can contract to create a tightening or “shrink wrap” effect on the skin.
Who is a candidate for SkinPen Micro Therapy?
SkinPen Micro Therapy can be used on all skin types and skin colors, and can address a wide range of problems, including: acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, and any area where cell regeneration is desired.
What happens during the SkinPen Micro Therapy procedure?
A sterile and disposable cartridge containing 9 to 11 microneedles is attached to the tip of the SkinPen. A thin layer of topical serum is applied to the skin and the appropriate micro-channeling depth is selected for your skin, anywhere from .5mm for a light treatment up to 2.5mm for a more agressive treatment. In a gentle motion, the pen is glided across the target repair areas. At shorter needle depths, you will feel a tickling sensation. More agressive treatments will usually involve a numbing cream as an option.
How does SkinPen Micro Therapy work?
As the SkinPen is moved over the skin, it vertically penetrates the surface layers of your skin. Your skin reacts by initiating the healing process, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin.
What can I expect after the treatment?
Most patients begin to see results in one day to a week after treatment, though each patient's healing time differs. Immediately after treatment, you may notice a pink appearance in the treatment area and in some cases minor pin-point bleeding depending on the depth of the needle penetration.
